2023 Vintage Sardines

A vintage series

With this series, we honor the historical know-how of the cannery and the creative work of contemporary local artists. The vintage series guarantees top-quality sardines that improve with age.

A seasonal catch

Our sardines, Sardina pilchardus, are caught during the peak season from May to October. During this period, the sardines are at their fleshiest, making them exceptionally tender and flavorful. They are sourced from the Breton ports of Lorient, Concarneau, Douarnenez, and Saint-Guénolé, and occasionally from St Gilles Croix de Vie in the Vendée.

Traditional production in our Penmarc’h workshop

The sardines are processed fresh, headed, and gutted by hand. They are fried in oil—an old-fashioned preparation that gives them the confit flavor prized by connoisseurs and allows them to mature perfectly in the tin. Jean-François Furic’s father and grandfather already worked this way. The frying oil is changed regularly, exceeding Label Rouge requirements.

Packed by hand

Before canning, we trim the tail and collar. The sardines are hand-packed “en bleu,” meaning the backs are visible when the tin is opened, unlike “white” preserves where the bellies face up.
We place 4 to 6 sardines in each tin.

LA COMPAGNIE BRETONNE Jean-François Furic Cannery

Values and Commitment

For the Jean-François Furic cannery, canning fish and seafood is a craft in its own right, requiring technical expertise and great discipline, but above all, a deep knowledge of fish and a sincere passion for the trade.

La Compagnie Bretonne is the result of nearly a century of experience in working with fish, driven by the desire to keep this profession alive and evolving at the forefront of Brittany.
These values and a constant commitment to quality have inspired the Furic family for four generations to offer products that respect both traditional flavors and innovative preparations.

ETHICS: A CORE VALUE OF THE COMPANY

Ethics is a core value of the company.

Three fundamental, inseparable, and complementary pillars illustrate this approach: respect, sharing, and balance.
– Respect & consultation with our fishing partners, suppliers, and retailers by building balanced commercial relationships.
– Respect & consultation with internal teams and balanced relationships and decisions.
– Transparency, listening, and sharing with our consumers

The commitments of La Compagnie Bretonne

La Compagnie Bretonne aims to be a benchmark in the premium canned fish market, both in terms of quality and innovation. We strive for sustainable growth by prioritizing quality over quantity. This choice is applied daily, from the selection of our fish stocks and key ingredients like olive oil to the relationships we build with our fishing partners and suppliers. We apply the same selectivity to our sales network, favoring independent retailers committed to offering quality products with expertise and ethics. We want to share our history and knowledge with everyone and remain transparent about our approach.

Due to limited supply, which depends on seasonal fishing and our quality requirements, La Compagnie Bretonne establishes commercial relationships with retailers consistent with its supply capabilities, benefiting both partners and consumers.
Given the quality and authenticity of its products, La Compagnie Bretonne attaches great importance to the environment in which they are sold. Retailers are requested to pay special attention to their points of sale and product presentation to protect the brand image and respect our development efforts.
La Compagnie Bretonne provides retailers with indicative retail prices based on product positioning and quality.

Sardineshop.be is therefore particularly honored to have the privilege of offering these fantastic sardines.
