Sardines in organic extra virgin olive oil

Sardines caught off the Algarve coast and canned near the Arade River in southern Portugal, in olive oil with lemon. Papa Anzóis’ signature dehydration process ensures a juicier sardine that is richer in omega-3.

The incredibly succulent fish is preserved in locally produced, high-quality extra virgin olive oil. Thanks to artisanal methods, a very small team, and limited production runs, this cannery is the only certified “manual” cannery on the Portuguese mainland.

The name Papa Anzóis is a quirky one. It comes from a map given to the cannery owners, Manuel Mendes and Vincent Jonckheere, by a customer. The map shows the locations of rock formations on the seabed along the Algarve coast. Fish gather near these rocks, and Papa Anzóis – which translates as the rock that eats fishhooks – is a notoriously tricky spot.
