Mackerel in olive oil

Mackerel caught off the coast of the Algarve and canned near the Arade River in southern Portugal. Papa Anzóis’ signature dehydration process ensures a juicier sardine that is richer in omega-3.

The incredibly succulent fish is preserved in locally produced, high-quality extra virgin olive oil. Thanks to artisanal methods, a very small team, and small production runs, this cannery is the only certified “manual” cannery on the Portuguese mainland.

The name Papa Anzóis is quirky. It comes from a map given to the cannery owners, Manuel Mendes and Vincent Jonckheere, by a customer. The map shows the locations of rock formations on the seabed along the Algarve coast. Fish gather near these rocks, and Papa Anzóis – which translates to the rock that eats fishhooks – is a notoriously tricky spot.

PAPA ANZÓIS

Papa Anzóis preserves are radically different from mass-produced canned goods.

Their artisanal production in small, controlled batches allows them to develop a premium quality product.

Instead of pre-steaming or frying the fish, they use a proprietary dehydration process to preserve the organoleptic properties of the fresh fish. Papa Anzóis pays close attention to ingredient handling, resulting in a rich, high-quality product.

As the name suggests, the raw materials come from the Algarve.
Papa Anzóis is committed to using ingredients sourced from local producers, ensuring maximum freshness and quality.

Papa Anzóis preserves were born from a dream to return to the historical roots of the canning industry in the Algarve’s Barlavento region. By reinventing the industry’s heritage and production processes, they have developed a superior quality preserve that respects the integrity of its ingredients.

The connection to the people and history of the region is also a way to develop a brand that brings together the past, present, and future of the canning industry.

The elegant and distinctive design of Papa Anzóis aims to create a strong identity and a timeless bond with consumers.
