Conservas Pinhais symbolizes: Hands, Love, Family, Tradition, and Perseverance!

Our mission is very clear: to produce canned fish that provides gourmets and food lovers with the finest experience the sea can offer through sustainable fishing, production, and delivery. Without false modesty or undue arrogance, the vision we share at Pinhais is: “To produce the best canned sardines in the world.”

The entire team (workers, buyers, managers, suppliers & partners) fully and responsibly embraces the weight of this ambition, from the past into the future.

A true heritage, this living museum that is Pinhais.

Millions of the finest sardines school along an immense coastline. For a hundred years, thousands of families from Matosinhos have united around a single industry. Dozens of factories have come and gone; one keeps the Traditional Method alive. A true heritage, this living museum that is Pinhais.

Founded in 1920, Conservas Pinhais & Co has grown over the past century by remaining faithful to a unique traditional canning method, which has remained unchanged for 102 years, ensuring the highest quality and flavor of its products. As the cradle of the canning industry in Matosinhos (Portugal), Conservas Pinhais & Co is the birthplace of iconic sardine brands and, since 2021, The Sardine Factory Tour—a pioneering living museum offering an immersive experience for the public in five languages, aimed at preserving the legacy of the canning industry for future generations.

The Pinhais “Sardine Journey”

Originating from the cold waters of the Atlantic Ocean, the sardines arrive fresh at the historic Conservas Pinhais & Co factory (5 minutes from the port) and are immediately immersed in brine to preserve their original characteristics and seaside freshness. Afterward, each sardine is hand-selected one by one, trimmed, and cooked in a century-old slow-steam oven, strictly respecting the traditional process that retains all the properties, nutrients, and flavor of the finest fish. Once cooked, the fish is ready to be canned, where premium ingredients are added: pure olive oil, pickle, piri-piri, carrot, black pepper, bay leaf, clove, or the handcrafted tomato sauce.
This is immediately followed by the canning, sterilization, and maturation of our preserves. The Pinhais “Sardine Journey” comprises 12 major steps, which multiply into 37 other meticulous stages, perfectly maintained daily in a truly manual process that ensures the globally recognized quality of our products and brands.
